Gender Workshop

The Aarhus Center in Bishkek, within the framework of the project “Involvement of the civil society in the process of updating and implementing the NDC”, held a seminar in Bishkek on February 27, 2021. This workshop was organized with the assistance of the UNDP GEF Small Grants Program, which was attended by representatives of government agencies, international and public organizations, universities, the mass media and experts in the field of climate change. The topic of the workshop was “GENDER ASPECTS OF NATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PARIS AGREEMENT ON CLIMATE CHANGE”.

Lira Dzholdubayeva, UNDP Environment and Climate Change Adviser in the Kyrgyz Republic, UNDP Program Manager, made a welcoming speech to the participants of the seminar and briefly presented information about the activities of UNDP in the development and preparation of proposals for NDCs. She noted the ongoing processes on this topic and pointed out the necessity to involve all segments of the population of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Then Adil Nurbekov, the head of the Aarhus Center spoke about the work of the project implementation, who informed the participants of the seminar about the work done and plans for the future. The next speaker was Ysabekova Baktygul, Project Coordinator for the Development of NDCs in the Kyrgyz Republic of UNDP, who made a presentation on “The Process of Developing Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement in the Kyrgyz Republic (NDCs)”. She told the audience about the very process of developing NDCs in Kyrgyzstan, about the established working groups in 5 different sectors (economy, social sphere, private sector), which directly carry out work on NDCs.

They were followed by the UNDP climate change experts Zoya Kretova and Anna Kirilenko. Zoya made a presentation “Climate Change in the Kyrgyz Republic: main trends and Challenges”, in which she gave interesting information about the state of affairs in various spheres of life of the people of Kyrgyzstan in connection with climate change over several years with an eye to the future.

Anna Kirilenko presented information on gender equality in the context of the impact of climate change. The topic of her presentation interested the audience, who had a lot of questions and suggestions.

At the end of the workshop, some participants noted the importance of the issues raised and the need to continue to inform the public and the ongoing activities in the process of collecting proposals in the NDCs.
