Socio-Economic Development of Settlements with Uranium Legacy in Kyrgyzstan

From June 23 to 27, 2026, the Aarhus Center organized a field visit to the Kun-Chygysh Ayil Okmotu of the Tong district and the Min-Kush Ayil Okmotu of the Jumgal district, featuring experts in socio-economic development and radiation safety.

During the mission, meetings were held with the heads of the ayil okmotus, chairmen (toragas) of local keneshes, executive secretaries of the respective ayil okmotus and local keneshes, and members of working commissions established to monitor reclamation efforts and conduct public outreach. The sessions also addressed cooperation activities within settlements with a uranium legacy in the Kyrgyz Republic.

OSCE experts T. Yunusov and R. Beishenkulova conducted training sessions on the socio-economic development of ayil okmotus, radiation safety, and the operations of cooperation members in settlements with a uranium past. A total of 22 people participated in the trainings and meetings across the Kun-Chygysh and Min-Kush ayil okmotus. K. Isabaev, Director of the Aarhus Center in Osh, met with the heads of the ayil okmotus, chairmen of local keneshes, and executive secretaries to discuss cooperation and coordination for implementing activities under the uranium legacy project.

The meetings also reviewed mechanisms for ensuring the sustainable operation of the Cooperation of Settlements with Uranium Legacy and the alignment of corresponding decisions within local keneshes. Participants discussed joint implementation activities and outlined future directions for cooperation.

Additionally, active participants of the Tourism Forum ‘Development of Min-Kush Village through Sustainable Tourism’ were awarded certificates of appreciation by the Aarhus Center. This forum was held as part of the project ‘Stakeholder Engagement in Addressing Uranium Legacy Issues in Central Asia. Phase III.’
