Kyrgyzstan Unites Efforts to Conserve Mountain Ecosystems
Bishkek Hosts Discussion on Central Asian Mountain Ecosystems and Kyrgyzstan’s Contribution to Biodiversity Day
Bishkek, May 20, 2025 – A consultative meeting dedicated to updating the characteristics of “Central Asian Mountain” ecosystems was held in Bishkek. The event, timed to coincide with International Biodiversity Day, brought together a wide range of participants from governmental, scientific, and public organizations.
The meeting was organized by the Environmental Network Zoi in partnership with the International University of Kyrgyzstan, with support from the Aarhus Centre and other international organizations such as UNDP, UNEP, CEPF, GEF, and the European Union. The goal of the meeting was to consolidate efforts to preserve Central Asia’s unique natural heritage and discuss new directions of work within the international initiative for biodiversity conservation.
During the sessions, presentations were made on ecosystem assessment methodologies by Zoi and the CEPF Foundation. Participants learned about the results of small grant programs implemented in Kyrgyzstan from 2019 to 2025 and future plans.
The next segment focused on the experience of scientific and educational institutions, public organizations, and initiative groups in nature research and conservation. Discussions covered new Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) and priority directions for the second phase of the CEPF program.
The concluding part of the day was centered on developing the potential of youth, academic, and civil initiatives. Participants discussed ways to expand the involvement of youth and the scientific community in protecting Kyrgyzstan’s wildlife. Information materials were also distributed on Kyrgyzstan’s role in international environmental initiatives and the five-year actions for sustainable development of mountain regions.
