Round table in Naryn, “Practical activities of public organizations in solving environmental problems – the successful implementation of the Aarhus Convention”

On September 21, 2017 Aarhus Center in Bishkek held a round table in Naryn on the topic “Practical activities of public organizations in solving environmental problems – the successful implementation of the Aarhus Convention”. Round table was participated by representatives of environmental services of the region, local authorities, public organizations , Naryn State University and independent environmentalists. The main objective of this event was to discuss the activities of public organizations in the region in addressing environmental issues, what methods they use and whether it brings results.

Most of participants made their presenation on envimental problems in region and how they solve them. All speakers noted that in recent years, the activities of public organizations in the field of environmental protection are gradually decreasing, and the organizations themselves are discontinuing their activities due to lack of financial resources and support from partner organizations, and this leads, in turn, to a decrease in control over the public. Each speaker spoke about the problems in the region, the weak work of the environmental monitoring authorities, the lack of information on the measures taken and the connection with the population on involvement in solving environmental issues.

Also, the presentation was made by the head of the Aarhus Center in Bishkek, Adil Nurbekov who spoke about the work of the Center for 2 years, about the implementation of the Strategy for 2015-2018, about the plans for the future and the creation of partnerships for participation in solving environmental problems in the region.

Normative legal acts of the Kyrgyz Republic in the field of environmental protection for 2009-2016 were presented to participants, which were collected by the consultants of SAEPF, UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic, the OSCE Office in Bishkek and the Aarhus Center in Bishkek.
