Monitoring in Kyzyl-Zhar Settlement
On June 3, 2025, monitoring of waste dumps and former uranium mining facilities was conducted in the Kyzyl-Zhar settlement, Tash-Kumyr city, Jalal-Abad Oblast, prior to the commencement of reclamation (remediation) work.
The reclamation efforts are planned to be carried out within the framework of the Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Government of the Russian Federation on the restoration of Kyrgyz Republic territories affected by uranium mining and the mining industry.
This monitoring was conducted as part of the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek’s project, “Promoting Green Economy and Environmental Governance.”
The event saw the participation of specialists from the Aarhus Centre in Osh, a representative from the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, a specialist from the Osh Oblast State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance, a state inspector from the Jalal-Abad Regional Department of the Environmental and Technical Supervision Service under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision (MNRETN) of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as the head of the Kyzyl-Zhar territorial administration.
During the monitoring, radiation measurements were performed at the production facilities and tailing dumps, and the results were mapped.
