Information on the survey of abandoned uranium heritage sites in the Kara-Tash

On November 2-3, 2017, with the financial support of the OSCE Program Office in Bishkek, the state of abandoned uranium heritage sites was studied in the Too-Moyun, Kara-Koktu districts of the Kara-Tash ayil okmotu of the Nookat district, attended by the Chief Inspector of the SIETS Regional Office, I. Dzhakishev, Senior Inspector of the same unit M. Sydykov, land specialist of the Kara-Tash ayil okmotu B. Baatyrov and employees of the Aarhus Center in Osh K. Isabayev, T. Zhumabekov.

This survey was conducted by the Information Aarhus Center in Osh together with the SIETS Regional Office within the framework of the project “Strengthening Environmental Security in Kyrgyzstan through the Green Economy, Disaster Reduction and Implementation of the Aarhus Convention”, implemented with the support of the OSCE.

Based on the results of the survey, the head of the Aiyl Okmotu Kara-Tash is recommended:

  1. To find an opportunity to protect and ensure safety in the non-cultivated objects of uranium deposits No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7, No. 8, No. 9, No. 10, No. 11, No. 12;
  2. It is necessary to additionally install warning signs in hazardous areas for humans and animals;
  3. Prohibit the access of people and use for pastures on uranium heritage sites;
  4. Heads of villages and specialists of ayil okmotu need to conduct explanatory work among villagers near the “Kara-Koktu” site for uranium heritage sites;
  5. Organize trainings with the involvement of specialists for school students about the harmfulness of uranium heritage sites located near the Kara-Koktu site.

Sulaimanov, head of the Kara-Tash sent letters on rendering assistance to solve this problem in Nookat District State Administration, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of the KR for the Osh region, the Osh Territorial Department of Environmental Protection, the Agency for Management of Tailings in the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the KR.

At the end of the survey, the participants visited the Nookat District State Administration, where they met with the head of the General Department, M. Abdyldaev. During the meeting participants informed about the preliminary results of the survey and discussed further steps to address these issues.
